Succulents are becoming more and more popular thanks to Pinterest. I spent quite a bit of time researching their care and the many different succulents out there. To be honest there are so many it is hard to remember them all. I did discover that they will grow anywhere and they are almost indestructible, so I said screw it and just started buying the ones I thought looked cool.
Luckily these little guys are fairly inexpensive. What is expensive are the planters and the filler, so keep an eye out for coupons and shop around. I found that Home Depot has the best selection of succulents. I have looked at Fred Meyer's and as a last resort Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart had the worst selection. It was very limited. What I did find at Wal-Mart though was the decorative rock as a filler. The moss and sand I got at Michaels.
Tips:
-Fillers-
The rock you can find in the home decor section in most stores next to the fake plants. When I was getting ready to put this terrarium together I did't want to use up all my sand on the bottom layer, so I cut a 2 inch section out of a milk jug (making sure to keep it connected) so that I could use it as a barrier. I positioned it at the bottom and filled the center with rock and then poured the sand around the outside.
-Placing-
Don't worry yourself with what goes with what. Just find a few and stick them in. They are all succulents so they all go well together. I will admit that I was a little weary of this one being a little dull, but then I added the bright green moss and it gave it that pop it needed.
-Planters-
Thrift Stores! Yard sales! Mason jars! This will save you so much money. The big jar above at retail value is close to $50. Yikes! I scored mine at a thrift store for $14 Don't worry about finding actual planters, think outside the box. As for the Mason jars, do not go out and buy a box. Just use the ones that you have in your pantry (spaghetti sauce jars, jam jars, any jars for that matter).
(All of these were thrift store finds. The two in the back on the right are decor apothecary jars and the one up front is a votive candle holder. Neither of these were more than $2 a piece)
